The Blue Mountains of New South Wales gained their name Blue Mountains as a result of the blue haze that covers them when seen from a distance (especially in hot weather).

The extensive Eucalyptus bushland of the Blue Mountains give off eucalyptus oil from their leaves. Some of this merges with the atmosphere to form a distinctive blue haze. This blue haze is far less evident nowadays, due to the extensive building developments that have seen deforestation of the mountains.

The Blue Mountains, which separate Sydney from the interior regions, are covered with vast expanses of Eucalyptus bushland. Eucalyptus trees, or "gum trees", give off eucalyptus oil from their leaves. Some of this merges with the atmosphere to form a bluish haze. It is particularly pronounced on hot days, when the sun's heat causes more oil to be given off by the leaves.

The Blue Mountains are no longer as obviously blue as they were prior to European settlement. This is due to the extensive tree clearing that has been done in the name of urbanisation.

They call it " Blue Ridge" because of the bluish color that is seen from a distance. It is caused from the isoprene in the trees that is released into the air.
