Lanius ludovicianus Loggerhead Shrike Is known as the butcher bird because it impales its prey on thorns or barbed wire fences and eats it like "a bug on a stick".

The Shrike has a hooked beak that is uses to tear meat off its kill and will even catch and eat small rodents. It has no talons to hold its prey which is why it has adopted this method of eating.

What are impaler birds?

Some shrike species such as the loggerhead shrike or the fiscal shrike are variously known as the impaler bird. It is also known as the 'butcher bird', but it should not be confused with Australia's butcher bird. The loggerhead shrike has a sharp, hooked beak. It gained its nickname because of the way it uses its hooked beak to break the spines of its victims, which range from insects, lizards and rodents to even other birds. It then impales them on sharp spiky thorns or barbed wire to hold them while it disembodies or dismembers them. Larger prey may be left to decay, as this softens the flesh.

What bird kills blue jays and not eating them hangs them upside down?

Shrikes, (also called "butcher birds") will hang insects and small rodents this way on thorns or barbed wire, but a jay is too large for the shrike to tackle, being somewhat larger than either the loggerhead or northern shrike. This sounds to me like a human activity. Corvids like jays and crows are often killed and hung to frighten other members of their species away from an area.

What bird is also called the butcherbird because it impales its prey on thorns?

Shrike

Do songbirds eat mice?

There are two songbirds known to eat mice and they are from the same species. They are the Northern Shrike & Loggerhead Shrike. They eat mostly insects. I have never seen either bird but they have a long beak that has a slight curve on the tip. The loggerhead version has a slightly larger head. Their photographs remind me of the color of mockingbirds. They are not very common and I believe there is an alarm concerning their dwindling numbers. They have a sinister habit of impaling their victims on thorns of plants, as they feast.

You spotted a blue-gray bird with a black face mask a white underneath with yellow toward the rump underneath but you cannot find it in your bird book. Closest one you found was the Loggerhead Shrike.?

I will need to note the size, general stance of the bird, (does it perch upright, cling to sides of trees) the outline of the bird, bill length, wing shape, tail length. Please give these stats and I can help you find your bird.
