Without an automatic response to a simple stimulus which does not require mental processing, a human being would not be able to react to its' own functions being harmed in any way. Example: Skin contact with fire, without a response to the flame, your skin would burn.
If the reflexes were not automatic, you´d have to think about removing your hand when you accidentally landed it on a hot surface. That couple of extra seconds could result to a severely burned hand. Automatic reflexes happen in response to a stimulae in your nervoussystem, and do not actually even reach your brain. There has been several studies where the reaction has been produced by your spine.
P.S. In Finland we have this idiom "tulee selkäytimestä" which translates roughly; "knows from the spine", that means someone has learned something by heart and can do it without thinking automatically. It is ages old idiom and has suprising connotation about reflexes.
The instinctive reaction is important because it takes time for signals to travel all the way to the brain and elicit a response - sending a message up the spinal cord takes time. Reflexes cause the body to automatically respond without waiting.

A reflex is a response to a given stimulus.an automatic instinctive unlearned reaction to a stimulus
knee jerk
An honest reaction is one that is considered a reflex. If someone hits someone and they respond back with a quick slap, that's an honest reflex, one that is not done purposefully.
A reflex is an involuntary response to an external stimulus, usually to protect the body. A reflex is much faster than a reaction. A reaction is a voluntary response to an external stimulus, and can be trained to become faster through regular practice. An example of a reflex is when the tendon below the kneecap is gently tapped. This causes the leg to kick slightly forward. This reflex is involuntary. An example of a reaction is a hockey goalie catching a hockey puck. This reaction is voluntary.
