For the same reason that people shorten peoples' names, e.g Frederick into Fred. It's just a human trait.
The second longest mountain range in North America are the Appalachian Mountains. The first longest mountain range in North America are the Rocky Mountains.
Why are you so short?
Michigan Has sort of mountains in the Upper peninsula, very close to WI. But I would recommend the Rocky mountains in Wyoming or MT. You could also find mountains in TN area "the smokies" But the rockies are a short 15 hour drive from WI. That's where you should go if you want to the the best mountains in the US.

If you want to get geographical you have to configure in the Red River of the North which flows north unlike the Mississippi and it cuts the drainage basin short up north in the Minnesota/North Dakota area. The appalcian mountains in the east probably do as well.
