People act from what they believe and therefore their beliefs are important.

Christian doctrine (Christian belief) is an attempt to state truths about the World, God, and us. For example, "I believe in God the Father Almighty, creator of heaven and earth" is the first phrase in the Apostles Creed and you can see that some "interesting" claims are made. First, God exists and is completely powerful. Second, God is also called a father, which would take a whole book to explain, and third God created the universe. If these things are true (and I believe that they are) then the way we act should reflect these truths.

"All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable FOR DOCTRINE..." (II Tim.3:16 KJV).

The "Literal Bible" [LIT] says: "Every Scripture {is} God-breathed and profitable FOR TEACHING...".

"Teaching" [paideia; pahee-di'-ah]: "tutorage, i.e. education or training; by implication, disciplinary correction: KJV--chastening, chastisement, instruction, nurture." (Strong's Definitions)

All "teaching" [doctrine]... regardless of its source... is pointless, unless the one being taught is "exercised" [trained, disciplined] by it; unless they "obey" it and "put it into practice" in their lives. Doctrinal teachings, when utilized, build the spiritual entity within us called -- "character" [or the unique 'personality'] that each and every human being develops in the course of his life.

This character development, depending upon the nature of the doctrine being taught can be "good" or "bad."

In the case of "Bible doctrine"... being exercised, trained and disciplined by it [coming into obedience to it]; the teachings [doctrines] of our Creator, through His inspired Word, BUILDS RIGHTEOUS, GODLY CHARACTER: the Divine Nature and Character traits that God's future Immortal Children will need [see Matt.5:3-12] to be born into His Family... and to LIVE FOREVER!

"...it is USEFUL to teach us WHAT IS TRUE and TO MAKE US REALIZE WHAT IS WRONG IN OUR LIVES. It STRAIGHTENS US OUT and TEACHES US TO DO WHAT IS RIGHT. It is God's way of PREPARING US IN EVERY WAY, FULLY EQUIPPED for EVERY GOOD THING GOD WANTS US TO DO." (II Tim.3:16-17 NLT New Living Translation)

There are many scriptures that answer that question. Here are a few. John 17:3, John 3:16, Philippians 2:5-11.

Philippians 2:9,10 reads "For this very reason also God exalted him to a superior position and kindly gave him the name that is above every other name, so that in the name of Jesus every knee should bend of those in heaven and those on earth and those under the ground."
