The BBC is a nationally owned broadcaster. In 1929 it received a royal charter to broadcast to the Unitied Kingdom without charge to the viewers.

It receives its funding through the UK television licence. Every household that receives television broadcasts of any kind are required to pay the licence fee. The collected fee is passed to the BBC and allows the corporation to operate without the need for commercial sponsors of any kind. The funding has been mandated by the government but the BBC operates independently of government and is allowed a completely free voice. It can be one of the government's fiercest critics.

Without the need to sell commercial space, the BBC can avoid the need to chase ratings. It is noted for some of its minority interest programming as a result. It also has the ability to produce high budget drama without a requirement to match income to costs.

The result is a broadcaster that consistently produces high quality programs and politically independent programs and is the envy of the world's broadcasters.
