As one of the enormous land masses collides with another they do so with huge forces this cause one to slide under the other. This collision both lifts and pushes into the other. This pushing into the edge creates wrinkles. These wrinkles are the mountain ranges. The Andes, Alps, Appalachian and Himalayas and several others were formed this way
