Your wisdom teeth are flat and are used for grinding. Evolutionists believe that our ancestors used them to grind and eat hard grains and seeds. Since modern mankind mainly eat vegetables and meats and often cook their foods, it is thought that they have receeded as they are not needed anymore. Evolution would thus dictate that they will eventually be lost altogether. Obviously there is disagreement on this topic depending on you beliefs.

I should add that it is not the wisdom teeth as such that is the victim of evolution. Since there has been a marked change in our dietary habits our jaws themselves became smaller, but somehow the evolutionary selection process forgot, that smaller jaws need lesser number of teeth.! The result is what we have today, smaller jaws and more teeth. So the last four teeth in each quadrant ( the third molars) have a difficult time wriggling out. It is true that we really don't need them for chewing. We may lose them all together in another million years.

In order to be able to understand this answer, you have to accept in the theory of evolution. Otherwise, read the bottom scentence.

During the process of evolution, third definite mollars stopped, at some time, being a sellection factor. That is, wether a certain specimen had fully operational definite third mollars or hadn't, didn't affect its capability to thrive and leave offspring. Nontheless, sometimes, some traits, although not directly relationed, are likely to be found toghether in people. Per example, it is more common to find attached ear lobes in lighter colour skinned people. Hence, some sellection trait was more unlikely to be found in the same specimen as fully functional third mollars, and so, this trait stopped being decisive and abundampt.

Sorry for my grammar.

Theological explanation: God made us have these anoying teeth so we would prove hardy enough to withstand the pain and smart enough to discover local anesthetics and teeth removal procedures. Some say God's favourite angel aspired to be a dentist, so he also made dentist appointments really expensive.

Hope this answer satisfies everyone.

Vestigal structures are structures that in the history of a species had an important role in survival but through evolution is no longer needed but still exists. Wisdom teeth used to be useful when they were needed to help chew and tear meat and grind at bone and other hard food. But now with tools and technology we dont need to do that. Another example is the tail bone on humans and whales still have the bones that would have been used for legs.

They are not needed (we have enough teeth without them) and there is no room for them. Almost everyone needs to get them removed. They are more of a pain (literally) than they are worth.

Why wisdom teeth are vestigial structures?

They are not needed (we have enough teeth without them) and there is no room for them. Almost everyone needs to get them removed. They are more of a pain (literally) than they are worth.

A list of vestigial structures?

The appendix, coccyx, Muscles that move ears, muscles that make hair stand up, little toe, and wisdom teeth.

Which type of anatomic structure are wisdom teeth?

A.Vestigial :)

Can wisdom teeth effect thinking?

Wisdom teeth have nothing to do with thinking. They are probably called that because they appear later on in life when one is supposed to be "wise". They are vestigial and serve no purpose whatsoever. Just like our tail bone is a vestigial organ so are the wisdom teeth in man.

What vestigial organs or in humans?

Maybe the appendix, wisdom teeth, tail while in the womb...

Are wisdom teeth an example of human evolution taking place right now?

Wisdom teeth are vestigial organs, which are organs that have lost their original or primary function. Wisdom teeth were used when humans had a primarily vegetative diet and needed to chew through thick vegetation. Rather than an example of evolution taking place, wisdom teeth reveal the remains of evolution.

Give any two examples of vestigial organs in humans?

1) appendix. 2) coccyx. ( tailbone ) 3) muscles that move your ears. 4) muscles that make your hair stand up. 5) little toe. 6) wisdom teeth.

What is a vistigial structure?

Vestigial structures are those structures which are present in our body but non functional.they are functional earlier time but non functional at this time.E.g.wisdom tooth which forms the last pair of our teeth line now become vestigial(are present but non working). Due to today's busy lifestyle.

What is the function of wisdom teeth?

Back in the day, there wernt dentists, so your teeth were most likely to rot. If all of your teeth were to rot, then you would most likely die, because all they ate back in the day was lots of meat......so evolution favored wisdom teeth, they would grow in long after all of your other teeth have grown in:))

What were wisdom teeth originally used for?

Anthropologists believe wisdom teeth, or the third set of molars, were the evolutionary answer to our ancestor's early diet of coarse, rough food - like leaves, roots, nuts and meats - which required more chewing power and resulted in excessive wear of the teeth. The modern diet with its softer foods, along with marvels of modern technologies such as forks, spoons and knives, has made the need for wisdom teeth nonexistent. As a result, evolutionary biologists now classify wisdom teeth as vestigial organs, or body parts that have become functionless due to evolution.

What is evolution and how could evolution affect vestigial structures?

Vestigial structures are structures that no longer fulfill their original purpose. Take wisdom teeth in humans as an example of this. At one time, as we know from the fossil record, human jaws were larger and could accommodate those wisdom teeth. As jaws became smaller wisdom teeth erupted into too small a mouth more and more times over human evolution until very few mouths can accommodate the onset of these teeth and they now are generally pulled at eruption. So, we can see the history of human evolution in our teeth!
