Most ceiling fans are single phase. There are a number of possibilities that can easily be determined by an electrician.

  • The breaker is tripped (Easy to check)
  • The switch is bad (This could be a normal on/off switch or a special fan control switch that sends commands to a control unit inside fan.) (Use a meter to see if there is voltage on the fan side of the switch with a meter)
  • Wiring from the switch to the fan could be open (See if there is voltage at the fan with a meter)
  • The motor for the fan could be bad (Check the resistance across the windings with and Ohm Meter and make sure the winding is not Open)
  • If there is a control board in the fan it could be bad (If all else fails, this may be the problem. I just replaced 5 such bad controllers on Casablanca fans with W-32 switch)
