At the time, both "uppers" and "downers" were considered fairly harmless pills to take. You took the former to lose weight, you took the latter to get to sleep -- and it was VERY easy to get far more than you could safely consume. Physicians were aware that dependency was possible, but usually looked the other way as patients became addicts. Sadly, Monroe became like many other people at the time: taking too many downers to get to sleep, then taking too many uppers to regain alertness.
