In 1852, US President Millard Fillmore authorized the mission to Japan by Commodore Matthew C. Perry. He arrived there in 1853 and is credited with opening up trade with Japan. He would make another voyage there in 1857.
Matthew C. Perry was born on April 10, 1794.
He was a commodore in the War of 1812 with his older brother, Oliver Hazard Perry, a general in the Mexican American War and sailed to japan.
Matthew C. Perry died on March 4, 1858 at the age of 63.
