Paalen had Bipolar disorder and was addicted to drugs and alcohol as well. I suspect that those issues contributed to his decision to take his life.

Elena Poniatowska writes in her impeccably researched historical novel "Leonora" that Paalen was (in addition to being plagued by depression) out of money and on his third marriage. Poniatowska suggests that Paalen simply followed Schopenhaur's philosophy: "A follower of Schopenhauer, for whom the most intelligent solution was to take one's own life, [Paalen] followed his teachings to the letter" (407, my translation).
