The League did not have a powerful armed force and could not enforce the required resolutions. It could not keep its economic sanctions. It failed to prevent the second world war. Hence it was replaced by the United Nations.

The League of Nations was the brainchild of USA president Woodrow Wilson. However the USA did not join the League of Nations. The League of Nations did not have an army to enforce it's commands. It had to rely on other countries to contribute. The UN is larger and has more countries. But it has a very bad reputation and is not a whole lot better that the League of Nations. There are troops that can be sent in.

The League of Nations was disbanded because it was powerless to effect change, manage peace and stop aggressions. The United Nations was formed and their mission was not only peace oriented but also humanitarian oriented, such as when they send aid to earthquake victims.
