Nobody knows for sure as it goes back a thousand years. The ruling theory is that the name was transferred from a term used by local tribes for the 'Swedish' 'vikings' (meaning something like the 'boat people'). According to legend a internal strife among 'Russians' were settles by accepting an outsider as king. This outsider is supposed to have been a 'Swedish' 'viking' leader. (Note: at that time there was nothing called Russia, Sweden and probably not Vikings either - these are all later terminology. The original term is just Rus).
