The entirety of 2012 is based on numbers and the three calenders that the Mayans use. It is not thought that all humans will die or the world will end but a change of some sort is expected. On several dates in the early 1960s it was confidently predicted by some religious groups that the world would end. Clearly it didn't. So, scientifically, December 2012, is no more likely than any other time for all humans to die.
