The caterpillars eat and eat and eat until they have filled themselves up with food to spare for months. Then, it will find a safe spot and use it's siliva, a mixture of it's food, and some surrounding leaves to create a little "shelter" while it transforms into a butterfly or moth. Hope this helps. =)

Anywhere! A cocoon is a silk 'sleeping bag' that some species of moths make. Inside the cocoon, the caterpillar changes into a pupa. From the pupa emerges the adult moth. A caterpillar may travel over 100' before it selects a spot to make its cocoon. Some species normally make their cocoons in trees, such as the Polyphemus Moth. Others sometimes make their cocoons in the leaf debris at the base of their host tree, like the Cecropia moth.

The caterpillar spins its cocoon out of a silk thread that it exudes from itself.

The silk we know of is obtained from this source, mainly from caterpillars fed on mulberry leaves. This moth no longer exists in the wild, and is dependent on humans. The production of this silk has been going on in China for about 5 000 years.
