Why do fire departments send fire engines on ambulance runs not involving street accidents?

Because the fire engines have trained Emergency Medical providers, emergency medical equipment and other equipment that could keep you alive until the ambulance gets there. Pretty much the only thing the ambulance has that we don't is the stretcher.
