For generations certain topics were absoluteluy (Hands Off) for juvenile fare on movies and TV- suicide, fatal accidents involving children, Harrowing depressive plots, etc. One might add the television drama ( and it was deep drama indeed, aided by lugubrious sound effects and dark shadows making even the Great Outdoors a menacing landscape- LASSIE was almost entirely in this genre. I can"t recall any comic relief- say with monkeys escaping from a carnival or something, no way, Kids trapped in wells, accidents of all types- some extremely improbable, forest fires, even in one incarnation, a seismic volcano eruption ( the mystery of the shaking mountain).l Heavy stuff indeed. I hasten to add Lassie was a serial program here, not a movie ( movies were made on the themes) I hope this helps Depression is not entertaining. I agree with you there.
