because i learned it in class and my teacher told the class that magnets only stick to iron or steel and teachers DO NOT LIE.

Iron is ferromagnetic. Steel is mostly iron, so the same applies. Other ferromagnetic metals are cobalt and nickel, along with gadolinium (not very common) and neodymium (even less so).
