If they said it was you, then then they would have to
- explain why it's you,
- explain how you could change (if it was possible),
- have to deal with hurt feelings, and/or anger
- possibly be attacked themselves, either physically, verbally, or through other means such as gossip.
It is a pre-emptive strike by someone who doesn't want to deal with these problems, but just wants to end it cleanly.
