Best Answer

Shere Khan plays upon young wolves natural distrust of men. Additionally he feeds them scraps from his kills to reenforce the idea that he is their friend and can provide for them better than Akela. Finally Shere Khan convinces the youngsters that they don't need a leader and should become the "free people"

When gray wolves were almost wiped out as the wilderness was settledwhat happened to the grass and elk in some areas?

Yellowstone park had no wolves for a long time and the large elk population kept all young alder and aspin trees grazed to extinction. There were no young (alder & aspin) trees in the park. Wolves were introduced in the 70's and now there are large groves of young trees - this is due to a dramatic decrease in the elk population - due to predations by wolves.
