Ever since the Earth's human population developed into societies, there has been some type of military. It seems that groups just can't get along as we would like. There is always a bully that wants what you have. In order for you to keep what you have, you must be willing to fight for it. Sad but true. The weak have always been preyed upon by those that thought they were stronger. Look at some of the wars and conflicts that are going on today around the world. Some countries that don't have any military have been abused, robbed, killed, enslaved by some other country who had the strength to take what they want. Countries that have the strength to stop them also have a moral obligation to help the weak. We also have a right to protect our own land and people. Because there is always a bully, there must always be a protector. If a bully attacks a weak country then they can only get braver and stronger, and it is just a matter or time before they try a larger country. If you see a friend being beaten, will you muster the strength within yourself and come to their aid? Or will you turn away and pretend it didn't happen? If someone bigger than you attacks you, will you lay down and give up? Or will you defend yourself? In a "perfect" world, we would not need to have militaries. Until then we need to be able to protect ourselves. We should be very proud of those who serve, to fight injustice and terrorism and to ensure our freedom.

Militaries exist to counter perceived threats.

Normally the answer is found, at least rhetorically, in a nations' national security policy. For instance, the United States goes through a lengthy and mostly public analysis of threats to its people's security and publishes a security policy on how it plans to prepare and act against those threats. Although an oversimplification, theoretically the military of the U.S. exists to execute the national security policy- usually further defined under a document called the national military strategy. So, at least for the U.S. (and most Western nations), the military exists in order to execute the plans in its national military strategy, which ultimately has the goal of protecting its citizens from threats identified in the national security policy.

And that would be the answer for other nations as well, although many do not go through as transparent or logical an approach. So, for instance, some nations have a military in order to combat a percieved threat- one that may in all actuality not exist or be very unrealistic.
