The evergreen is simply the only tree that remains with green during the cold months of the year. Because Christmas is in between these cold months, they started decorating these trees in the Christmas spirit, because they were a general icon when Christmas was thought of. Christmas trees are not the root of Christmas, by any means, but are a part of the tradition now. The original Christmas, December 25th, was made a "holiday" because it is the approximate time of the birth of Jesus Christ, in the city of Bethlehem. The "most wonderful time of the year" originated from Jesus' birth, but our culture has made it so another man represents Christmas, Saint Nicholas. But the actual word "Christ-mas" can be translated as "more of Christ". Our culture today has sadly disregarded Christ as the reason for Christmas, and instead has been filled with greed, and gifts. It is still a time of joy for many families to come together, but first comes from Jesus Christ's birth, which eventually was the turn of the ages, resulting in BC (before Christ) and AD.
You put up Christmas Trees because Santa (if you believe in him) has so much joy and ho-ho's that if he sees a tree he will give presents... if you don't have a tree put up, you wake up on Christmas Day with no presents. I believe in Santa and this point of view is my point of view, it may not be true but this is my word for it. I don't like Christmas, I love it!
Christmas trees and greenery have been used for hundreds of years and the tradition appears to have begun in Germany. Since evergreens remained green year round, they were sometimes thought to have magical powers and kept the evil spirits (howling winter winds) away. They also served as a reminder of spring and freshened the air during the cold winter months. Protestant reformer Martin Luther is often credited with first lighting trees. http://www.altogetherchristmas.com/traditions/christmastrees.html Hope this anwers your question. Deborah
The tradition of the Christmas tree started over a thousand years ago with the ancient Celts. They would bring evergreens into their homes because they represented life in the dead of winter. They did this during winter solstice. When the Catholic church began to convert the tribes to Christianity they kept some of the customs for their rituals and one of these was the tree. Because a pine/evergreen tree has 3 points on it they were able to say that it represented the Trinity. This kept the tradition going. In the 1800's another boost to the tradition was given with the story by Dickens of the Christmas Carol. In the story the family celebrates the season with a tree, gifts, a goose or duck, pudding, and crackers. People began to think that this was a good idea and started to celebrate Christmas in this way. It was the Germans who added candles to their trees where the "lights" come from and eventually those were replaced with bulbs. Even today in Germany most of the trees have all white lights. When the Germans came to America they brought with them the Christmas tree, thus spreading the idea further. Today we have added new things to the Christmas tradition still changing it further.

People in the United States decorate their homes on the inside, and many put decorations on the outside. They put up a Christmas tree and decorate it with lights, tinsel, ornaments, icicles and other decorations. Candles (electric) are put in windows, mistletoe is hung over doorways, manger scenes are put out, and other decorations are put up. On the outside of homes, lights are put on houses and trees, manger scenes are put up, and other Christmas decorations are placed in yards. Even mailboxes in the country are decorated. Stores and businesses also decorate trees and put up decorations similar to those in homes. Many cities and towns put up lights and other decorations along the streets.
