One of the main kinds of speakers needs both.

Sound in the form of varying electricity is fed through part of the speaker known as the 'voice coil' which is actually just an electromagnet. Since the electricity in it is varying the magnetism produced by this coil varies too. The voice coil is placed close to a permanent magnet and the voice coil is permitted to move back and forth in response to the electricity going through it. A big cone is fastened to the voice coil to transmit the movements of the voice coil to the air more efficiently. Thus overall the permanent magnet and the electromagnet work together to produce the sound waves that we hear from a speaker. For a more detailed explanation go to the How Stuff Works web site and search for speaker.

When would you want to use an electromagnet rather than a permanent magnet?

When you need a magnet you can turn on and off an electromagnet is used.

Is a north or south magnet in a compass a permagnet or an electromagnet?

A magnet made from a steel paperclip is most likely a(n) temporary magnet.

What is the difference between magnets and electromagnet?

an electromagnet is a magnet which is activated by electricity and it ceases to be a magnet once the electric supply is stopped whereas a magnet is a natural magnet which does not need electricity and continues to be a magnet whether it is supplied by electricity or not.

What advantage does an electromagnet have against a bar magnet?

With an electromagnet, the magnetism can be turned on and off according to the whim or need of the operator.

What are two advantages of a electro magnet over natural magnet?

A permanent magnet is always on; there isn't any way to turn it off. An electromagnet can be controlled; you can turn it on or off, or change the amount of magnetism by varying the current passing through the coils.

How is electromagnet the same as permanent?

An electromagnet is only magnetic while current is flowing through the coils. A permanent magnet is always magnetic, and does not need electricity. An example of an electromagnet at work is in a metal scrape yard, where a large electromagnet is used by a crane operator to lift ferrous metals into a crusher (scrapped cars, for instance). The metal drops into the crusher when the electricity is switched off by the crane operator. Therefore, they are only really similar when both are magnetised.

Is a permanent magnet needed to make an electromagnet?

no you just need something metal like an iron nail and wrap a coil of un-insulated wire around it and send a current through the wire.

Is an electromagnet likely to be attracted to a magnet?

An electromagnet is simply a device that will create a magnetic field when electricity is run through it (basically a normal magnet, but you need to plug it in). Depending on the magnetic charges of the electromagnet and the regular magnet, it should either attract or repulse like magnets normally do to one another.

Do man-made magnets have no charges?

Man-made permanent magnets are not so different from naturally-occurring magnets. In the case of a permanent magnet, electrical charges are irrelevant. The magnet may, or may not, have an electrical charge, but that doesn't affect the magnetism. An electromagnet works by electrical currents, which is a flow of charges. The electromagnet, however, doesn't need to have any net charge. In other words, any charge would go in at one point of the magnet but an equivalent charge would go back out at some other point.

Why can't we use a permanent magnet in a scrap yard?

You need to use an electromagnet in a scrap yard so that you can let go of the pieces of scrap that you pick up. A permanent magnet would not allow you to let go.
