Why does the contestant have to hand the final prize envelope to Pat Sajak on Wheel of Fortune?

In order for the game to be validated, the show host must have possession of this special prize envelope. A shrews contestant could conceivably have another envelope in his pocket and substitute it for the real one. It just keeps honest people honest and removes any doubt that the prize in the envelope is genuine.
