Because it is much closer than all of the others.

The Sun is only about 8 light minutes away from the Earth, while the closest other star to Earth is many light years away. (Alpha Proxima, 4.2 ly to be exact)

The apparent larger size of the sun at sunrise and sunset is an effect of the refraction of the sun's light as it passes through Earth's atmosphere. The sunlight travels through much more of Earth's atmosphere at these times than it does at midday.

It is an optical illusion. The moon appears large compared to small things on the horizon. When it is high above, it is dwarfed by the vast expanse of sky.

You can confirm this to yourself with a wooden yardstick and a big paperclip. Bend the paperclip so that it matches the size of the moon (near the horizon) when you hold the other end of the stick against the bone of your eye socket. Wait three to six hours for the earth to rotate so that the moon is much higher in the sky, and take another reading. You should be unable to detect any real difference.

It's an optical illusion, the sun doesn't actually look bigger (it's the same size in the sky). The reason it SEEMS bigger is because of how our brains interpret distance. Our brains can't really cope with distances of more than a few hundred meters, so when you see the sun (or the moon) high up in the sky, even though you may know that it's millions of miles away, your brain thinks it's only a few hundred meters away. However, when it's near the horizon, your brain can tell it's really far away, as it's farther away than the trees or mountains or whatever's on the horizon. Since it's the same sun as always, it really is the same size, but since you THINK it's farther away, it will APPEAR bigger.

When the sun (or moon) is high in the sky there are no objects of known size to compare the sun (or moon) to. But whan the sun is low in the sky you can see far off objects near the horizon that you know ar big and you imagine that the sun is even bigger (it is!) The apparent change in size is an optical illusion.

Because we are closer to the sun than to the stars. The sun is bigger than SOME stars. Stars can be all different sizes. Some stars are in fact smaller than our sun but not as small as they appear to be. On the other hand, some stars are hundreds even thousands times larger than the sun we see. They only look small because they are so far away.

yes because at the horizon the sun is closer to earth than any other time of day so yes, yes it will

The Sun looks bigger because it is the closest star to Earth.

When it is close to horizon why does the moon sometimes appear larger?

This is a well-known optical illusion which is most likely caused by the relative sizes of objects surrounding the Moon. Clouds and buildings appear smaller near the horizon, which makes the Moon look much larger in comparison. When the Moon is high in the sky, clouds and perhaps buildings around it are much closer to you, which makes the Moon look smaller in comparison.

Once a year the moon appears larger?

Actually, the Moon appears larger when it is at the horizon. This is every time you happen to see it near the horizon, but it is only an illusion.Actually, the Moon appears larger when it is at the horizon. Are the sun and moon larger when at the horizon?

No, they just look larger.

Does the moon become larger on the horizon because it is closer to earth?

No. It APPEARS larger due to the "moon illusion". This is an optical illusion that may be caused by the process our brain uses receive images of this sort. Such as a celestial object set against a relative, known background. The "moon illusion" does not appear when the moon is above the horizon, and higher overhead.

When does the moon appear largest in the sky?

When its closest to the horizon.

Will Mars be as large as the moon in August?

Mars is always larger than the moon. However, I think you mean will it appear bigger than our moon. No - never - not even close.

The sun and moon appear elliptical near the horizon due to?

refraction

Is the moon brighter or dimmer at the horizon?

It's the same either way. It is a common optical illusion that the Moon is brighter or larger near the horizon, but actual measurements show no difference.

Why does the moon appear to be different size?

The Moon's orbit is elliptical; it can be as near to Earth as 240,000 miles and as far as 280,000 miles. Near the horizon, there are atmospheric illusions that make the Moon appear to be larger than it is. The more "full" the Moon is, the bigger it appears to be. When these factors are combined, at the time of the perigee full moon, the Moon can be objectively about 15% larger than normal, and the illusion at Moonrise can make the Moon appear to be enormous. The moon looks different sizes at different times due to the distance apart it is from earth. The further away the moon is from earth the smaller it will look. The closer to earth it is the bigger it will look.

How it happening no moon day?

If you don't see the Moon in the sky, it may be under the horizon. Close to new moon it is hard to find the Moon.

Where does the moon appear to rise?

As moon revolves around the earth and earth rotates. The moon appears to move from below horizon to above. The relative motion above the horizon gives an illusion of rising and setting from east to west.
