The heart pumps blood in two ways -

1. To distribute blood to all living cells of the body, by means of the arteries, providing oxygen, nutrients, vitamins and hormones. Also to carry the waste products of cell metabolism by the veins i.e. carbon dioxide, toxins back to the heart.

This is called the systemic circulation.

2. To pump blood to the lungs to expel waste gases mainly carbon dioxide, and to carry oxygen diffused by the lungs back to the heart ready to be circulated again.

This is called the pulmonary circulation.
