people are often under the misconception that aluminum is not very abundant because when compared to some other widely used metals it is expensive. aluminum is in fact the most abundant metal found on earth however does not exist free in nature. all aluminum isotopes have bonded with other elements and here in lies the cost. the production of aluminum is expensive because the process to extract and purify it is considerably higher than other metals.
to answer your question the cost has gone down due to advancements in Metallurgy and technology that have driven the cost of production down. it's still not cheap relatively speaking especially when you start dealing with higher grades like those used in aircraft.
