It's called the Han Dynasty because Liu Bang 劉邦named it that in honor of his native land. Wrong. It was named in opposition to his main rival who was nicknamed "Xi Chu ba wang 西楚霸王. ". Chu 楚on the Chinese chessboard is the opposite of a place called Han 漢 . Since he's the opposite of Chu [ba wang], it's appropriate to call his land "Han".Chu he han jie = 楚河漢界 = the battlefield on the Chinese chessboard.
