Homer was a mystery to scholars because of his stories and his mysterious life. They thought that his epics were a collection of stories from several generations. This was also compounded by the fact that nothing was known about his life, except some accounts claiming that he may have been blind if he existed.
Homer's identity was not clear up to the present time, because there were no accounts about his biographical information such as date of birth, or place where he lived. Though we met Homer through his works there were no assurance that he really wrote the two epic poem. We cannot even confirm about who exactly wrote this master pieces, since during their time they performed this orally so the written accounts were later discover. Probably someone transcribe the poem.
Homer was also introduce to use through the writings of his students like Plato. Some also claim that the name Homer did really exist. Then the destruction also in Alexandrea probably damaged the original text and important information about Homer.
