Why was Justinian important?

Before I get to Justinian some background information is necessary. The eastern half of the old Roman Empire was maintained as the western Roman half was over run by various Germanic tribes. The Emperor Constantine founded the city called Constantinople, which carried on the old Roman Empire. Constantine enlarged the city of Byzantium, and it was strategically located on the peninsula in the area called the Bosporus. This is where Europe meets Asia Minor & the Black Sea joins the Mediterranean Sea. This was a favorable city in terms in its ability due to its location. This eastern part of the old Roman Empire eventually became known as the Byzantine Empire & lasted until the Ottoman Turks conquered it in 1453. In 527 AD the emperor Justinian embarked on a military strategy to re- conquer some of the territory that had been part of the original Roman Empire. He is given credit for improving the legal & administrative arm of the empire. His military conquests were mainly in the Hellenistic & Oriental parts of the old Roman Empire. This included the Balkans, Turkey, Syria, Palestine, & Egypt. The area of his influence also covered part of Mongolian territories. This "Byzantine" civilization" adopted many of the old Roman Empire's laws & enabled allot of Greek & Roman literature to be preserved. Much to my surprise he was even able to re-establish parts of Northern Africa from the Vandals, parts of Italy from the Ostrogoths, & southern Spain. He re codified old Roman Laws, thus they became known as the Justinian Code. He built many new buildings, new roads, and churches. St. Sophia being one of the more notable ones. After many extraordinary achievements, his rule came to an end at his death in 565 AD

He was important for compiling the Codex Justinianus, a summary - and partly re-write - of ancient Rome's many laws and jurisdiction through the ages on Civic Law and turning them into one coherent Civic Code. It remained in actual use for about a thousand years in most of the then-known Western world and after that, became the touchstone for the later Civic Law systems of many European countries.
