In turn, animals or other organisms and any unharmed area of the habitat are are protected from further harm as well as preserved.
High specific heat means that a lot of energy is requred to increase the temperature of water. This property of water minimizes fluctuations in water temperature and therefor permits life. Without this property, organisms would not survive in the extreme temperatures of water.

Too cold and they'll freeze to death, too hot and they'll die from the heat. So basically the climate helps organisms live by providing them with a suitable climate.
