Your pupils dilate

You wouldn't look directly at the Sun; you naturally turn away and cover your eyes. As you turn to face the sunlight, the pupils of your eyes naturally close to minimize the glare.

In a Solar eclipse, the temptation is to look at the darkness in the sky, and the pupils of your eyes will dilate to let in more light. When the eclipse ends, your wide-open eyes are exposed suddenly to the full brilliance of the Sun, and your eyes cannot react quickly enough to avoid burning your retinas.

DO NOT watch a solar eclipse without proper eye protection.

It isn't the eclipse that's harmful to the eyes; it's LOOKING AT THE SUN that caused eye damage. If you want to look directly at the eclipse when it is in progress, you MUST have a solar filter that will block about 99% of the light from the Sun; welder's goggles, for example.

It's easy to build a perfectly safe eclipse viewer that will project the Sun's image into a piece of white cardboard. Follow these instructions:

Because it will eat you if you look into it's harnessey eyes not to mention she is wearing a Chasity belt. LOL

LMAO

The intensity of the sun is too much for your eyes at any time. Watching a solor eclipse without the proper eye protection cal cause permanent damage to the retina leaving you either with dfficulty seeing or blindness. It's like sticking your hand in a fire only you don't feel it quite the same but none the less it will burn and cause life long trouble. Protect your eyes

Additional answer

It's not just the intensity of the light, it's the type of radiation - ultraviolet. UV is not good for the retina.

Because during a total solar eclipse (one of the most beautiful natural things to witness) the direct light of the sun is blotted out, making it possible for the ignorant to literally stare at the black moon, circled by the brilliant halo caused by the sun's corona. However, the reduction of light does not eliminate radiation that is outside of our visual range of perception. This radiation is extremely dangerous and will bring serious harm including the possibility of permanent blindness to the unwary. NEVER observe a solar eclipse with the naked eye.

It's unsafe to look at the sun any time.

During a solar eclipse, people are more likely to look at the sun, simply because

strange things seem to be happening to it.

So the point is not that it's more dangerous to look at the sun during an eclipse.

It's that you're more likely to want to look at the sun during an eclipse, so that's

the time to caution you against it.

The radiation is dangerous.

The ultraviolet can damage all parts of the eye, and the shear intensity can burn the retina.

On the other hand - during a total eclipse its perfectly safe to look all you want ... the trouble comes as the eclipse ends and you don't look away fast enough.

It looks as dim as dawn for a few seconds, but its not - its the full intensity of the (midday) sun.

Why can you look at a lunar eclipse and not a solar?

A solar eclipse is when the moon comes between the sun and earth, so it's dangerous during a partial eclipse because it's like staring at the sun, but not during a total solar eclipse, because the moon completely covers the sun.

Is it a myth that the eye gets damaged if you look at the sun during solar eclipse?

Sort of. If you look at the sun during the total solar eclipse, then your eyes will be fine. but they will get damaged when the sun comes out from behind the moon and burns your then-dilated eyes.

Why do you go blind when you look at the solar eclipse?

Looking at a solar eclipse without eye protection is basically looking at the sun. The sun emits ultraviolet rays that will damage your retina if you look directly at it. The only time it is safe to look at a solar eclipse is during totality when the sun is completely blocked from view.
