Jesus Christ came that He might die for our sins, and pay the penalty owed God in payment for those sins by surrendering His life for us and shedding His blood for us that whosoever might then believe on Him, might be saved. That operation wasn't possible until He surrendered His life for us, died, rose again, ascended to Heaven, and then the Holy Spirit, referred to as the Comforter was sent that would enable men who then believed to be "reborn" with a new spirit, a new man. Or born again. None of this was possible until Jesus laid down his life for us, as it was only He that could accomplish this mission to save mankind from eternal destruction.

No. Without Jesus Christ, there would be no Christianity.
It is important because this proves that Jesus defeated death, and therefore defeated all sin and paid the final price so that human's sin cannot keep them from being with God as long as they believe in Jesus Christ. "For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life through Christ Jesus our Lord." -Romans 6:23 Jesus rose from the grave and ascended into Heaven to be with God.
