Why is it unwise for oyster fishermen to chop upa starfish and throw the pieces back?

It pollutes the water with the hard shell and all that.
The main reason why oyster fishermen should not chop up a starfish is because all the chopped up pieces of starfish will each grow into another starfish. So when the oyster fishermen think they killed a starfish, they really made new ones which will eat and kill the oyster crop (the two main predators of oysters are humans and starfish).

∙ 14y agoSea stars can regenerate; so if you broke a sea star into two parts both parts would regenerate into two new sea stars. Thus you would greatly increase the problem rather than fixing it.
