Because if there wasn't subduction the earth would get bigger and bigger caused by sea floor spreading (in the ocean new ground is formed when two plates spread apart) and lava comes up and cools causing new rock to be formed and the plate that is being pushed away is subducted melted into the mantle and then comes back up through the mid-ocean ridge (where the sea floor spreading is taking place) so if you think about it the earth is recycling itself.
