The same mass of a substance contains the same number of molecules regardless of whether it's solid, liquid, or gas.

However, generally, the solid form is the densest, so it will normally have more mass (and therefore more molecules) per unit volume than the liquid or gas phases.

This is not always true, but it's a good rule of thumb.

It would be the solid phase because the molecules are closer together (imagine on a cold day some kids huddling together).

Why is solid the densest state of matter?

Solid is the densest state of matter because the atoms are packed tightly together in a solid.

What state of matter are held tightly in place by other particles?

The state of matter that is held tightly in place is in the form of a solid. Gas particles are not tightly packed, unless they are being pressurized, same with water.

How does melting change state of matter?

It changes solid into liquid state. An example is when chocolate melts into liquid chocolate when it is heated with high temperature which is enough to make the chocolate's molecules less tightly packed than before and causes it to flow.
