In order to learn about the wholesale slaughter of innocent people - Jews, gypsies, etc., etc. - with the vain hope that it will prevent such abominations happening again. The Holocaust might seem to be a along time ago to you (I am assuming that you are a young person) but there are many survivors of that living hell and for it to be forgotten or considered unimportant by those who follow would be an appalling insult. David Ben-Gurion (among others) said that you should forgive but never forget, for if you forget, it will happen again. There are many other examples of genocide and, sadly, genocide is still happening today in many countries.
Six million people were murdered by the Nazi regime in WW2, and it is important that we learn about this so it will never happen again. It was a planned destination of a race, of people who disagreed with Hitler, of people with disabilities, of the gay community, and anyone else who got in the way. The hate of this time still is alive and carried in the minds of some. We need to know the history and to be aware that it could happen again.
