You shouldn't hold the back of a saddle (called the cantle) when you mount, because sometimes, if the girth (English)/cinch (Western) isn't tight enough and the saddle can slip. Always make sure the saddle's girth/cinch is snug and safe enough to mount.

What should you look for in an ill fitting saddle?

The saddle shouldn't be touching or rubbing on the withers at all. You should easily be able to put some fingers between the saddle pad and the front of the saddle. The seat should be wide or narrow enough to fit your horse's back correctly. The base should not be too curved or straight for your horse's back. Basically, a saddle shouldn't restrict the horse's movement in any way.

Why should you never hold hold the back of the saddle to mount?

Answer: because this causes the spine to twist and could cause back problems in the long run !!! Answer: Proper mounting has the left hand on the reins and neck of the horse, and the right grasping the horn or pommel with the right forearm in the seat. By doing this, you won't pull the saddle off if done properly. As a riding student years ago, I had to learn to mount with out the girth fastened. I subsequently taught all my riding students this method. A tough equitation class can be won or lost on a good mount/dismount practice. As a judge, I used it when classes/ championships were very closely tied. You will also save on wear and tear on your horses back, and have a lot less back problems for all your mounts.

What is the correct way to mount a horse when using an English saddle?

1. Make sure the cinch is tightened enough so the saddle won't slide down when you try to mount 2. Stand to the left of the horse with your back to the horse's head 3. Place your left foot in the stirrup (make the stirrup longer if you can't easily reach it with your left foot) 4. Place your left hand at the front of the saddle, and your right at the back of the saddle 5. Push off from the ground with your right foot, and pull yourself up to the saddle 6. You're now standing in your left stirrup: swing your left leg over the horse's back and sit down gently
