An excellent question! what amounted to the theme song of the violent Crime Western (Butch Cassidy) was the soft-toned Raindrops keep falling on my head- which had NO connection with the plot except a brief comic-relief sequence about an 0ld-time bicycle salesman. Even more to the point, the rollicking ( Children"s Marching song- Knick Knack Paddy-whack- give the dog a bone.. etc- was the theme song- and sung on the march- in the morose if not nose-dive depressing (Inn of the Sixth Happiness). going further afield, some ideas in theme songs are unworkable in reality- wishful thinking of past times ( My Favorite Things) does NOT disarm Dog Bites! and so on. it is amazing how many themes songs have nothing to do with the plot of the film but lure the audience.
