The Christian church has been around for about 1600 years and for most of that time it was in a position of power. And this meant that no one was permitted to oppose their interpretation of the bible Upon pain of death. As a mater of fact the only people that were permitted to read The Bible were members of the clergy. Eventually the church started to lose this power along with the development of the printing press. this led to a situation where people other then the Catholic church were now church putting their own slant upon the biblical writings and attracting people that up to now had very little idea exactly what Christianity was all about aside from the ingrained belief that they had to be Christian's. Christianity was wide spread and people were now forming uncontrolled religious groups all over the world and if there was a disagreement over some point then there would be a split and up pops another denomination. So the reason for all the different denominations in Christianity is that it has been a long time since Christians have been in a position to kill each other on religious grounds.

Is Catholic a denomination or is it the name of a specific church rather than a denomination?

Catholicism is not a denomination. It is the name of the original Christian Church and is not divided into denominations. There are different rites within the Catholic Church - Maronites and other Eastern Rites for example - but they are all Catholics and not separate denominations. Denomination usually refers to Protestants who have some 36,000 denominations.

What is the difference between Anglican church and Christian church?

The Anglican church is one group of denominations within the larger Christian church -- unless you mean the groups that grew out of the Restoration movement and Campbell in the 1800's. These groups have a congregational governance, rather than the episcopal governance of the Anglicans. They emphasize believer, rather than infant baptism. They practice "ordinances" of baptism and communion, rather than sacraments. More differences of doctrine and practice, but all believe in salvation through God's son, Jesus Christ.

What is a interdenominational church?

The prefix "inter" means "between" or "among". Denomination usually refer to the various Christian (usually not Catholic) denominations such as Presbyterian, Baptist, AoG etc. So an interdenominational church would include people from various denominations with all the various emphasis of beliefs. That is, emphasis of beliefs that distinguish denominations. There is a common set of essential doctrines amongst the denominations that enable this to occur. The interdenominational church finds unity in this common set of essential doctrines.

How many denominations are there in Christianty?

Only God knows. Seriously. There is no requirement for denominations to register with any governing body, so there are a great many small denominations, some of which do not have a physical church, and therefore would be exceedingly difficult to count. The below link is a possible reference.

Why do Protestants call themselves christans and not Protestants?

The word 'Christian' means 'follower of Christ', while 'Protestant' refers to any denomination which separated itself from the Roman Catholic Church. While some members of Protestant denominations may well refer to themselves as Protestants, by and large the association with Jesus Christ is considered more important than the disassociation with the Roman Catholic Church - as such, 'Christian' is the primary term used.

What religion were all the presidents?

All U.S. Presidents have been of the Christian faith (of varying degrees). Of all Christian denominations, there have been more Episcopalian U.S. Presidents than any other. NOTE: Some Presidents merely had a Christian preference but never claimed membership to the church they attended. Also, there have been five Presidents with either Unitarian membership or preference. Though many Christian churches don't consider Unitarianism as being a "real" Christian faith, the Unitarian church of yesteryear fell in line with what most Christian beliefs are today --save, perhaps, the notion of the Trinity.

What towns in Utah are more Christian than Mormon?

First of all, members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (the "Mormon" church) are Christian, they are just not Protestant or Catholic Christians. No towns in Utah have more 'Christians' (Protestants and Catholics) than Mormons. There are towns that have more non-Mormons than Mormons, but not all of the non-Mormons are Christian. Many of them are not religious or belong to other faiths such as Islam, Judaism, or Buddhism.

What does unaffiliated Christian mean?

An unaffiliated Christian is a Christian who does not have a denomination nor a membership in a church. Unaffiliated Christians will attend more than one church; unaffiliated Christians will go to one type of church on one Sunday and will go to a different church the following Sunday. I believe that this practice is increasing and it might be because many Christians do not feel that their personal beliefs are compatible with church teachings.
