Mount Rushmore is named after a New York City Attorney. Charles E. Rushmore was sent out to this area in 1885 to check legal titles on properties. On his way back to Pine Camp he asked Bill Challis the name of this mountain. Bill replied, "Never had a name but from now on we'll call it Rushmore."

It was known to the Lakota Sioux as Six Grandfathers.

As he was passing a peak, he asked the name of the peak and his local guide answered that it did not have a name, but from then forward it would be called Mount Rushmore.
Mount Rushmore is named for a New York City attorney who was in the Black Hills in 1885 checking titles to properties,.

One day, while riding past the mountain, Rushmore asked guide William W. Challis what the name of the mountain was. Challis jokingly replied that the mountain did not have a name, but that it did now, that they would call it "Rushmore". The United States Board of Geographic Names officially recognized the name "Mount Rushmore" in June 1930.

The mountain was named in honor of a New York lawyer Charles E. Rushmore, who was in the Black Hills conducting business in 1885. Since work did not begin on the carving until 1927, the mountain name has no association with the presidential carving.

On Mount Rushmore is Teddy Rosavelt's head finished?

No it is not. The heads of the four presidents were all completed by 1941. The original plan was to have them carved from head to waist, however lack of funds forced a change to just the heads. The outline of Washington's coat is visible on the sculpture, as well as part of Lincoln's hand. Mt. Rushmore never got finished because Gutzon Borglum, the sculptor, died.
