Solon was put in control to resolve an impasse between aristocrats and the people, ending debt slavery and produce a degree of equity, retrieving the farmers who had been sold overseas for debt under the old system, but in a fashion which would not bring the aristocrats to reverse their willingness to compromise. This solution was only temporary as the aristocracy tried to maintain its ascendancy and ward off loss of influence and assets. The people then supported established a tyrant (dictator) to represent the interests of the broad populace.

After years of unrest, Athens found themselves on the brink of war. In 594 BC, the aristocrats who ruled Athens appointed a leader named Solon to make changes.
