In 330, Constantine declared the city the capital of the Roman Empire, and named it Constantinople, after himself. Constantine XI died while defending the city from the Ottomans on May 29, 1453. Immediately the name of the city was changed to Istanbul, and the city was declared the capital of the Ottoman Empire.

When Constantinople needed help from the western half of the empire, the west helped, only to turn on the east and captured Constantinople. The east was then able to re-capture Constantinople, but never gained back its strength. That left the Turks with their golden opportunity to attack and sack Constantinople, ending the Byzantine empire.
