People were starting to worry about air and water pollution. There had been a big oil spill the year before in Santa Barbara, California, and US Senator Gaylord Nelson thought that a special day would gather the energy of Americans. Twenty million people gathered that first Earth Day all across America. April 22, 1970.

Earth day is held on April 22nd every year. It was chosen on this day for a few resons..

1) It is late enough in the spring to be able to expect decent weather.

2) It will never fall on spring break, school exams, or any other holiday so people can concentrate on the environment.

3)April 22 is also the birthday of Julius Sterling Morton, the founder of Arbor Day, a national tree-planting holiday started in 1872. Arbor Day became a legal holiday in Nebraska in 1885, to be permanently observed on April 22. According to the National Arbor Day Foundation "the most common day for the state observances is the last Friday in April ... but a number of state Arbor Days are at other times in order to coincide with the best tree-planting weather."[56] It has since been largely eclipsed by the more widely observed Earth Day, except in Nebraska, where it originated.
