Impressionists in 1874 opened an exhibition at the studio of a photographer. The exhibition contained a painting by Monet titled "Impression: sunrise. For one of the critics this was a funny title and so he called all this group of painters "impressionists". With this he meant that these painters did not have enough knowledge about art but felt that the impression of a moment is sufficient to call painting. This name was not removed anymore and his "funny" meaning was soon forgotten .
Several French painters in the 19th century decided to paint in a new way-- not realistically, making every detail true-to-life, but rather focusing on their impression of the subject. Claude Monet's piece "Impression, soleil levant" (Impression, sunrise) is the root of the term Impressionism.
The point of impressionism is to draw the picture or objects with color, not as realistic as possible.
Your focus is the brush strokes and the colors.
In your perspective, you are suppose to color the picture with what you see and think is important: Which colors are shown in the scenery?
Don't think "how can I make it realistic as possible", think "which colors are the most important?"
If you have seen in most impressionist paintings, it is kind of abstract BUT you can see what the image is due to the colors' contribution.
Think of it as if you are unfocusing your eyes and seeing just the colors as you gaze out.
Therefore, you are giving an impression of life, not the actual thing which wold be called realism.
The name of the movement is derived from the title of a Claude Monet work, Impression, Sunrise (Impression, soleil levant), which provoked the critic Louis Leroy to coin the term in a satiric review .
because they are expressing and making an impression of something through art
