The metric system was based on the decimal system, and was designed to allow easier conversion from one unit to another. All units of one type can be converted to another unit of the same type by multiplying by an exponent of 10.

The right answer was it was made because of Gordon Stimpsons idea that everybody agreed with.

Examples:

100 cm = 1 m

1000 m = 1 km

Conversion to other units:

Volume: 1cm X 1cm X 1cm = 1 ml

Energy: heat to warm 1 ml of water 1 degree C = 1 J
The metric system was introduced to allow for easier conversions between units. The metric system is based on the decimal number system, which is in common use today.

Each unit can be converted to another unit of the same type by multiplying by an exponent of 10.

Because it is based upon multiples of 10. E.G. 1 Metre = 100cm 1Metre = 1000mm

1Kilogram= 1000 gram 1 Hectare = 10,000 Square Metre. (Too easy !)

The British or Imperial system is totally crazy. E.G. 1Mile = 5280 feet = 1760 yard

1 Acre = 43560Square Feet. 1 Pound weight = 16 Ounce Weight. 1 Ton =2240 Pound

The metric system is a standardized system of measurements developed to facilitate universal communication and understanding in areas such as medicine, trade, scientific study, etc.

Why ?

Well, how many people do you know who can answer all of the following off the top of their head:

Number of feet in 1 mile ?
Number if yards in 1 mile ?
Number of inches in 1 yard ?
Number of cups in 1 gallon ?
Number of fluid ounces in 1 quart ?
Number of ounces in 1 pound ?

Perhaps the greatest immediate effect of the introduction of the metric system was to cure universal measurement-illiteracy among the masses.

But that effect was soon overshadowed by the great improvement in the ease of international trade, among nations who
now shared a common, simple, universal system of weights and measures.

What is the advantage of metric system from English system?
