Yes they had to be because they settled on Anglo saxon lands.It is difficult to know how vicious the Vikings were because they were pagans, and accounts of them were written by their Christian victims. Also, the Vikings were fewer in number than the people they attacked, and they depended on terror to make their attacks successful. Some of the Viking viciousness may be exaggerated, but they were certainly a dangerous people to be feared.

While the Vikings were vicious, they were not actually more vicious than many other people. The Norse for example were equally vicious. A lot has been said about the Vikings since they did their attacks from sea, while most others did their from land.
