it is because pneumatics is more flexible and easy to use rather than hydraulic[ebolton] There is no need to have a reservoir or return piping. The working "fluid", air, is non-toxic and non-flammable.

Poster below is correct. Air systems typically have a tank that is the analog of a hydraulic reservoir.[ebolton]

Actually there is need for air reservoir in industrial pneumatics systems.

Hydraulics can handle more powerful aplications than pneumatics for the same overall dimensions, or can be more compact for the same power.

Hydraulics are suitable for higher forces & precise motion than pneumatics.

This is because hydraulic systems generally run at significantly higher pressures than pneumatics systems. Movements are more precise (repeatable) because hydraulics use an incompressible liquid to transfer power whilst pneumatics uses gases. Pneumatic systems have some advantages too. They are usually significantly cheaper than hydraulic systems, can move faster (gas much less viscous than oil) and don't leak oil if they develop a leak.

Each one has its own advantages. Generally hydraulics are more powerful while pneumatics are less expensive overall and simpler to maintain. Pneumatics are also generally cleaner environmentally. Pneumatics can also be pre-pressurized while hydraulics cannot.

Hydraulics tend to be better for large things, like heavy machinery. Pneumatics tend to be better for small things, like cars, robots, and Legos.

pnematics works on air and hence it is readily available in the atmosphere.

implies no need of any special storage tank.

it is low in cost than its counterpart the hydraulics.

it is much more compact than hydraulics.

it is very suitable for power transmission when distance of transmission becomes higher than mechanical and lower than the electrcal.

it gives better contol over other transmission sources such as the mechanical and the electrical.

the biggest advantage is the amount of power in a given space. Hyd systems typically operate at 2000psi and up, compared to about 80psi for pneumatic. Also, since fluid is non compressible, the moment distance can be linear. Many aircraft, and industrial equipment now use electric servos instead of hydraulics. Biggest problem with hydraulics is leaks. 2nd biggest problem is continuous power consumption to the pump.

Lots of air power is used in industry, so it is the easiest way to move or clamp anything, with nothing more than an air cylinder and a valve.

Each system has it's place to do different things.

Is Hydraulics More Effective Then Pneumatics?

My thoughts go like this...(from watching 'Scrapheap Challenge"0 plus a little basic knowledge of physics. 1/ Pneumatics involve the movement of pistons and what not via the medium of compressed air or air under pressure. 2/ Hydraulics involve the movement of pistons and what not via the medium of compressed fluids or fluid under pressure. 3/ Fluid is denser than gas (compressed air). I believe hydraulics can handle far heavier loads than pneumatics. Pneumatics would appear to use a lighter more flexible medium than hydraulics. In answer to your question, I believe hydraulics would be far more effective at manipulating heavy loads versus pneumatics. However, pneumatics would be a more flexible system than hydraulics. Hows that?

What is hydraulics and pmeumatics?

Hydraulics is the use of liquids to transmit power. Pneumatics is the use of gases (usually air) to transmit power.

What is the definition of hydraulics and pneumatics?

Machines of all types need power. Power allows the machines to do specific kinds of work. Two of the most efficient and compact forms of power for machines are hydraulic and pneumatic systems. Hydraulics and pneumatics can be configured into different types of power sources to lift, lower, pull, push, turn, rotate and move machines carrying tremendous loads. Tools can also be powered to break stone, join steel and cut wood. Hydraulics and pneumatics provide the energy to make work happen.

What are the properties of hydraulics and pneumatics?

One similarity is that they both use fluids. Both gasses and liquids are fluids. the two are also compressible.

When to choose pneumatic or electric actuators?

pneumatics are used only in low power applications hydraulics are used in medium to high power applications.

What is the primary reason to use hydraulics instead of pneumatics?

oil is slightly compressible 0.5 % at 70 bar. but air is compressible. so to get the required pressure pneumatics require more energy source than hydraulics also there are some limitations for pneumatics in terms of force.

What are the advantages of pneumatics over the hydralics?

Basically pneumatics deal with lower loadings, hydraulics offer a better power to space ratio, useful in say aircraft design.

What is the primary difference between pneumatics and hydraulics?

In hydraulics. Power is transmitted through the air. The pneumatic. Power is transferred by the oil.

Which car company is using the pneumatics or hydaulics?

BMW uses hydraulics for its brakes

What are the differences between Hydraulics and Pneumatic systems?

Hydraulics use liquids as the working fluid, pneumatics use gases as the working fluid.

How are hydraulics and pneumatics the same?

One uses a liquid, one uses air. not the same

Why is pneumatization important?

It is extremely essential in Hydraulics and mechanics. Your car would not run without pneumatics.

With regard to compressibility how the working fluids in pneumatics and hydraulics differ?

Fluids are used in Hydraulics - fluids are essentially incompressible - they transmit forces well (e.g. a car bottle lack) Gases are used in pneumatics - gases are compressible - you can therefore store energy in a pneumatic system (e.g. a car tyre)

Can solids or gases be used as hydraulics?

Solids do not flow at room temperature, so they are not practical for use in hydraulics. When a gas like air is used in a system similar to hydraulics, it is called pneumatics. Sometimes hydraulic systems use both, like in an automobile lift.
