Knowing it is ahead surely negates any advantage there might be in having it set ahead.
Is it not better to know the time accurately? If it rings and you sleepily think "I have another 20 minutes", you can oversleep. Why not set it to the right time, and get up when it rings. I set mine to give me 30 minutes free time in the morning for reading, catching up on the news and emails. That way, if I really feel like lying in for a while I can, but I don't usually.
